Mass Televison Watching Session in 70s

Back in my kampong, most of the villagers eagerly anticipated the Friday night as that was the only time for us to watch our favourite Malay movies on RTM1. In the 70s, only a few households owned television sets as our village was only supplied with electricity in September 1983. And the houses which had televisions in that era were those located near the primary school.
So, after performing our Maghrib and Isyak prayers at the nearby ‘madrasah’, we headed for one of these houses. My uncle’s house was our favourite port as he also owned a sundry shop, so, before watching the show at 8.30 pm, we could have a bite of the snacks sold in his shop. Besides screening the late P.Ramlee’s films, RTM1 also had Merdeka Studio’s action flicks featuring our local hero Ed Osmera and other famous actors like Hussein Abu Hassan and Jins Shamsuddin. The show usually ended at 10.30 after which all of us went home on foot or by riding bicycles to hit the sack before another promising day started with brighter events. Watching Malay movies was indeed the only form of entertainment for my village folks in those days since it brought the whole village to a standstill.

  1. Kt kg ambo yg ada TV rumah tok penghulu, mlm sabtu (cerita melayu..p ramlee etc). Maka penuhlah orang kampung (terutama remaja & budak2) dtg menonton. Tok penghulu tak kutip tiket, tapi dia jual kacang, jajan..dan makanan ringan lain. Memang meriah….

  2. dulu masa kecik.. kat umah aku la satu2 yg ada tv ni… cuma pasang masa mlm sabtu, cerita melayu dan masa citer combat je… aku tukang kutip tiket 10 seorang, utk belanja minyak generator…. 1 kampung dtg, penuh rumah aku… kekadang ada yg terus bermalam krn rumah jauh dan dah tengah mlm (masa tu jalan kaki je)

  3. To akula,

memang situasi di segenap kg di kelate pada thn 70an n awal 80an hampir sama. tv guna kuasa bateri kereta. dipasang semasa citer2 tertentu aje spt citer melayu, combat n ultraman. now anak2 tutup tv bila nak tido je…

  4. To sonata anak kancil,

rasa2nya tiket murah je..10 sen, cukup utk cover charge bateri tu nanti. ya lah…..kalu satu kg dtg mari tengok tv umah kita mestilah sumbangkan sikit kat tuan umah.

  5. To Syifu67,

wow! buleh tambah pendapatan bila kutip tiket tu…dpt gak guna duit tu utk caj bateri kereta tu. kg abe di sayong ke tu? hmmm..kalau berjalan kaki takut gak nak balik esp kalu kena lalu bawah pokok besar….hehehheeheheh makan budak.

  6. Sometimes, it feels great to reminiscence about the good old times. Memoir of yesteryears make we more appreciated living today. May we repeat it to our children..

  7. To ezzati,

Nostalgia tengok TV hitam putih dulu. hiburan x byk..budak2 cuma terdedah kpd tv, radio n akhbar/majalah.jadi x banyak gejala sosial…skrg ni daddy nak benarkan anak main di tmn permainan depan umah pun takut…kes sharlini byk mengajarku…

  8. Salam Dady,

Nostalgia tu… Tv nie masa zaman kanak2 dulu jer dpt merasa tgk… tp hitam puti ler… tak der kaler… bila dah rosk tv tu, kotak Tv dijadikan aquarium…. hehehe…

  9. To Atikah,

bagus gak kalau tv hitam putih ni kita jadikan sbg second tv kat umah tu kalau keadaannya masih baik. buat aquarium pun kira satu cara nak kekalkan alat elektronik terawal ni…

  10. ya, seluruh Malaysia ada pengalaman tengok TV hitam putih tu. Sekarang zaman dah maju..dunia dah berubah. memang pun dpt merapatkan semangat silaturrahim sesama insan.
